Epicism Guild Philosophy

Epicism Guild Philosophy

Greetings Fellow Adventurer,

I wanted to take a moment to write some words about what exactly I am trying to accomplish here. You see, I have just put the finishing touches on the first draft of a freshly renovated website, and while it does a fair job of presenting what this is, it doesn’t speak a whole lot about who I am and why this thing exists. Here’s my attempt to shed some light on why.

Once upon a time, there was a much younger man who ran a World of Warcraft guild. His goals at the time were to find likeminded players, mostly to avoid the hazards and sordid experiences that seem to permeate everything, everywhere. Long story short, the internet is full of abrasive people who don’t know how to behave in the good company of benevolent strangers. Fifteen years ago, that much younger man sought an altruistic way to make, let’s face it, a safe space.

Safe spaces were hard to come by out here in the wild of the internet back then, and they’re even more scarce now. We exist in a culture that seems to laud shocking behavior as a virtue and twists insults into cutting edge humor. Making others feel less than did not strike me as fun back then, so I sought to create something better.

What came about was Epicism, a place where people did not inflict themselves upon others, but rather came to the table with an altruistic and simple mindset centered on how they could help each other to succeed at their goals, whatever they are. We raided. We explored. We sought rare mounts and acquired rare titles. We had a seriously awesome amount of great fun.

Ours was not a place for hardened political ideologies, crass behavior, or prioritizing forgiveness over permission. We had a simple expectation of empathizing with others like us, who found communion and community in Azeroth and beyond. We brought not just our in-game goals, but a desire to help find others who would help us to achieve them. Why? Because World of Warcraft is at its core a social experience, and like that of the real world, none of us can do it all alone.

As for me, well… I’m a dad of two kids, one of whom is off adulting himself and another who is soon to follow. I find myself with the time and inclination once again to help build something epic. Can I find a group of people who can find themselves in the vision of what Epicism once was? I suppose time will tell.

If you’re still with me to this point, it’s quite likely that you are among the friends this journey will help us to find. I’ve set a target date of early 2026 and will now embark on the process of finding those for whom the above sounds ideal. Whether or not that is you, I sincerely hope that this game brings you whatever you are trying to find.

Warmest Regards,

Gale - Guild Master and Founder
